4.0 Cellars

Fredericksburg, TX

Visits: September 2016, June 2015, April 2015, and July 2014

Exterior of 4.0 Cellars

4.0 Cellars isn’t a winery in a traditional sense but a grand tasting room for McPherson Cellars, Brennan Vineyards, and Lost Oak Winery.  These wineries are located well north of the 290 Wine Trail and decided to join forces to bring their wines to the people visiting the 290 Wine Trail and Fredericksburg.  This is a great concept that makes these producers much more accessible to many more people.  They have also begun their own 4.0 Cellars label where the winemakers take turns producing a wine for the label.

4.0 Cellars offers several different tasting options, all of which give an opportunity to taste from all 3 partner wineries.  The offerings on the tasting menus change fairly regularly, so visitors will have a chance to try new wines on repeat trips.  We typically gravitate to the all red wine tasting option and have found some favorites doing so.  The other tasting options include Cellar Select (a mix of white and red wines), Light and Sweet (a tasting of their sweeter offerings), as well as their Texas Wine and Cheese Experience, which we tried on our last visit.  The Texas Wine and Cheese Experience is a pairing of 5 wines from 4.0 partner wineries with 5 cheeses from Veldhuizen Cheese near Dublin, TX.  This tasting is done in small groups in a private room by appointment only, so be sure to book early.  Considering the quality of the wines and cheese, this tasting is a deal at $20.  We think this will become a regular experience for us when we visit the Fredericksbug area.

Pro tip for savvy wine shoppers:  You can order wine from their website and pick up on site.  So if you know you are making a trip soon, be sure to check out their website for a special bottle that may have limited availability or the Close Out Specials section for hard to pass up deals.  We've gotten some tough to get bottles as well as some great deals by shopping online ahead of our visit.

If you can't make the visit to 4.0 Cellars or their partner wineries, you can still try some of the wines that are in distribution.  McPherson Cellars wines can be found at many wine merchants throughout Texas and increasingly so for Brennan Vineyards.  McPherson’s La Herencia is one of my go-to Texas wines.  Brennan’s Buffalo Roam and Tempranillo are also very good.
